January 31st, 2026, 10:30AM-12:30PM EST

at the Rose Thunder Farm Willow Festival

Join us for a two hour workshop and make a hanging spiral willow basket!

This class is open to total beginners as well as professional crafters. Participants will design and make a willow spiral basket using rods they'll harvest on site.

When:
 Saturday, January 31st, from 10:30AM - 12:30PM

Location:
Rose Thunder Farm, 370 Lavender Road, Old Fort, NC 28762

Workshop Description: First we will venture out into the willow patch to gather our materials, then we will use a template to craft a conical shaped hanging spiral willow basket. These baskets are good for holding things such as garlic, small fruits, a glass jar lantern, or dried flower arrangements. We will discuss some basics of willow basketry while acknowledging the accessibility of the craft, the materials, the history of the land we are gathered upon, and the current cultural environment we practice this craft within. Capacity: 12 people

Bring: Gloves and a sharp pair of pruning shears if you have one.  We will also have shears available for folks to use.

Age limit: 12 years of age and older, or a younger person accompanied by a parent.

Note:
Please note this class will require average-moderate hand strength and may not be a good fit for those with hand sensitivities including hand injuries and arthritis. Please reach out to the instructor for more clarification about this if needed.

Inclement Weather Plans: If the weather is inclement on the day of the scheduled workshop, we will reschedule for Sunday, February 1st at the same time.

Cost: This workshop has three ticket price options at $40 for a standard ticket, $60 for a sponsor ticket, and $5 for people of the global majority (PGM) from racialized communities. Twenty percent of the ticket sales will be redistributed to the Native American Indian Women's Association, NAIWA (10%) and the Reparations Stakeholder Authority of Asheville, RSAA (10%).
